Beaching in the Barra Area of Salvador
Off to the Barra district
After breakfast we grab an Uber and head to the Barra district in Salvador, which is another safe area. As in most cities, some areas of Salvador are safer than others.
Salvador is a very clean city. Street cleaners are everywhere. I actually find myself hard pressed to get a picture without a streetcleaner in their orange and blue outfits somewhere in it.
Beautiful Beaches
The main attractions of Barra are the Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse) and its beautiful beaches, lined with shops and restaurants.
We walk the main strip, stopping in the shade to rest and people watch. It is really hot out. There are a large number of men in speedos on the beach. I fear that John and I will be the most covered people on the beach.
After resting up on a high, grassy hill overlooking the beaches, we continue our walk to find a restaurant for a drink, light lunch and a place to change into our bathing suits.
Finding vegetarian is a bit challenging. We find a few restaurants with pizza on their menus only to find that pizza is unavailable for lunch apparently its just a dinner item.
We head to Praia da Barra (Barra Beach) which borders the lighthouse. We rent an umbrella, chairs and table. The cost is $5 CAD for as long as we want. The water is warm, like bathwater. We spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing.
Sunset
Too soon, we pack up, buy ourselves some fancy street popcorn and head to the top of a hill to watch the sunset.
We grab a cab back to our area where we enjoy the sunset’s afterglow over the water and then head back to our hotel to change.
Last Night Walk in Salvador
At night we take one more walk around the historic square in Pelourinho.
We have really enjoyed Salvador.
