We had a great sleep and after breakfast walk to the Kew Gardens tube (subway) station.  On the way to the station we pass the Maid of Honour tea shop. This building has been around Sign that says that this shop made the Maids of Honour dessert served to Henry VIIIfor 100s of years and was the bakery which made Henry VIII’s favourite tarts. Everywhere you look there is history- I love it

By 10:15am John and I were on the tube on the District Line heading in the direction of Upminster and then on the Piccadilly Line in the direction of Cockfosters. You have to love the names. Our final destination is Covent Garden where we are meeting John’s cousin Kate.

After the warmth of Jordan, this morning’s temperature of -2 seems quite cold. It’s totally freezing.

We arrive early to Covent Garden and wander around a bit before we meet up with Kate.

We walk through the Covent Garden market and I see a man at a British souvenir kiosk. I ask him if he has any boxers. He replies “Yes, but I’m wearing them”. I love the British sense of humor.

The whole area is decorated so beautifully for Christmas. We decide to go to the restaurant earlier than our reservation since we are all pretty cold.

It is so good to get together and catch up.  We  talk and talk and talk.

Christmas Market and Bowie

We head back into the cold to check out a Christmas market. And then we search for the interactive David Bowie pop-up store. We eventually find it and like Bowie, it is very cool.

Christmas Lights

Christmas lights on buildings and large light displays of peacock feathers arched over the road

It is dark out when we leave the Bowie store and I am totally blown away by the Christmas decor and lights. Just gorgeous. London really knows how to dress up for the holidays. 100 percent world class.

We stop off at Fortnam and Mason which is a high end food & department store which also provides goods to the royal family. The store is packed and the line up to pay is huge. Before we go back into the cold, we have a cup of tea in their restaurant. I’m rather aghast at the prices. I knew London was expensive but £5.95 ($10 CAD) for a simple cup of tea- yikes!
We say goodbye to Kate at the tube station and head back to Kew Gardens.

We have a lovely relaxing evening with Zoe.

  1. If you are at Covent Garden, don’t miss the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. It has been renovated a few years ago and is one of the most revered Opera Houses in the world.

    • Spoiler alert…We did go yesterday but couldn’t get into the theatre. It is lovely. That post will come out tomorrow
