Great Barrier Reef- Part 2

Wavelength Tour

Kimberly and John snorkeling

The Wavelength boat at the marinaToday we have a full day of snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. We are going with a company called Wavelength Reef Cruises which operates a much larger boat than our first reef tour. It also includes snacks, lunch and tea/coffee and a marine biologist who gives a seminar and takes us on an underwater tour.

It takes 1.5 hours to get out to the reef from Port Douglas. I am glad I brought ginger anti-nausea pills because shortly out of harbour I start feeling a little off. The pills work their magic and I make it to Opal Reef without losing my breakfast.

RayBan Site

Giant Clam

New Coral GrowthThe first reef site is called Ray-Ban. The snorkeling is fabulous, especially the many bright corals. You can actually see where new coral is growing. And the giant clams are amazing.

Mojo Site

Clown fish from above

clown fish with its eggsWe have refreshments and snacks before arriving to the next site called Mojo.  We do a snorkel tour with the marine biologist who points out many things (including clownfish…Nemo) which we may have missed without him. The clownfish is actually attending to all his eggs.

Back on board we have lunch while we learn a lot about coral and conservation.

Bashful Bomme Site

Parrot- fish and friend

two fish and coralThe final site is Bashful Bomme. We are feeling a bit tired but that all changes when we are back in the 76° F water. It’s like a magic kingdom down below with the colourful corals, and huge variety of fish and sea creatures including the blue, green and purple parrotfish, graceful angelfish, bright yellow squirrel fish and myriads of others. So many different shapes, colours, sizes and patterns. Although tired, I am sad to come back in when the horn blows.

blue fishThere are a number of people in their twenties from the Toronto area on the boat. One of the staff members tells us about a funny Australian show called Aussie Adventures which I have to check out.

The Wavelength Reef Cruises was very well done. I highly recommend it. It is independently owned and they go the extra mile. Here is the link to their site.
