Flight to Adelaide

John boarding the plane to Adelaide

Adelaide from the airWe said our goodbyes to Belinda and Andy last night. We are out of the house and heading to the airport at 4:30am. The 50 minute flight on Virgin Australia from Melbourne to Adelaide is non-eventful because I slept the whole way. John does get some good pics of Adelaide from the air.

Breakfast at Peter Rabbit

Peter Rabbit Breakfast

We pick up our rental car at the airport and go straight to the central area of Adelaide where we park the car and go for breakfast at a highly recommended place called Peter Rabbit. The place is very popular and we go on a waiting list for a table. It is worth the wait.

Torrens River

Torrens River front

Dragon for the Moon FestivalWe go down to the Torrens River and walk along the riverfront. A lantern festival is set up for the evening, it should be really pretty.

Continuing on our walk we see the Adelaide Oval (a big sports stadium) and St Peter’s Cathedral; a grand gothic revival Anglican cathedral.

The State Library of South Australia

State Library

Inside the State Library of South Australia

We walk through the train station, passing Parliament House on our way to the State Library of South Australia. The old Mortlock wing of the library is considered to be one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.

Books in the State LibraryNearby, an ibis crosses the street at a busy intersection. It seems so odd. Click here for a short video.

I hit a wall (figuratively) at this point because I only had 3.5 hours sleep last night. We start to head towards the car.

Rundle Pedestrian Mall

Pig in garbage statueI do quickly revive for a brief period when we go through the pedestrian Rundle Mall area. I am totally enamored with the bronze pig statues, especially the one that looks like he is rooting around in the garbage. These lifesize pig sculptures are named Horatio, Truffles, Augusta and Oliver. They were installed in 1999.

We pass Victoria Square and Chinatown on the way to the car.

We drive to our Airbnb near the beach. We have the entire upstairs of the house with a living room, kitchenette, dining area, two bedrooms (one which we don’t use), bathroom and balcony. The winds are really picking up. I go for an afternoon nap while John heads out to check out the beach.

Our hostess suggests a nearby grocery store that has premade meals. We go when I wake up. The premade meals are healthy and well balanced. I have lamb in a light mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes and squash. Delicious and only 380 calories. John has butter chicken.

We both have an early night.
