Kata Tjuta and Ayers Rock

Sunrise at Kata Tjuta Lookout

For the third morning in a row we get ourselves up before 4:00AM …this time to catch the bus to watch the sunrise over Kata Tjuta, (Uluru ‘s lesser known sibling rock formation).
From this sunrise platform we can also see the sun rising beside Uluru which
gives us a whole different perspective than yesterday. Even at Kata Tjuta’s lookout, distant Uluru steals the scene when the sun appears at 6:08AM.
It is currently a very comfortable 22°C/71°F.
Exploring Kata Tjuta

Back on the bus, we head over to Kata Tjuta. Unlike Uluru which is one big rock, Kata Tjuta is a jumble of large rocks. It’s name means “many heads” referencing the numerous large round head shaped rock formations.
We stop first at what our Australian bus driver calls a “long drop johnny” otherwise known to us as an outhouse. It smells rather ripe.
Then we are off to the Walpa Gorge Walk. It is a one hour return hike up rocks. It is quite doable because there is
a strong breeze and we are walking mostly in the shade. The last fifteen minutes is in the sun at a cool 80°F. We are back on the bus by 8:00AM.
On the bus ride back to the hotel, we pass a pack of wild camels grazing in the grass and shrub. Unfortunately I couldn’t get my phone out fast enough to get a picture.

Chillin at the Resort
We are back by 9:15AM. We head for coffee at a cafe where we meet a lovely well travelled couple from Australia and spend a pleasant time chatting.
We take the air conditioned resort bus around to explore the resort and scout out where to have dinner. I want to check out the camel farm but sadly it closed at 12:30PM. At least I spot a very cool pigeon . It is too hot (39°C/103°F) to walk around so we head back to our hotel to rest and pack for our flight tomorrow morning.
Final Sunset at Uluru

At 5:00PM we are back on the hop on hop off bus heading to Uluru again for one last sunset. We come prepared with special nonalcoholic drinks (bubbly raspberry & lemon flavoured coconut water and blackberry kombucha) and snacks.
We stop first at the Mala Car park at Uluru and then drive around Uluru before heading to the sunset viewing area. Uluru glows the reddest just before the sun sets. We meet people from all over the world who are also watching the sunset.
Evening at the Resort
We head back to the resort and have supper at the Outback Lodge. Well the Outback is hopping; good food, a bar, good live music, a large, scary security guard and dancing. All the things I love…sadly, since I’ve been up since 3:45AM, I am starting to fade.
We have one more stop to make before heading to bed. We head to the lookout on the resort to check out the stars. We wanted to find the Southern Cross constellation but our stargazing app shows it lurking right on the horizon and we cannot see it due to terrain blocking our view.
So back to our room for the night, and looking forward to NOT getting up at 3:
