Vianden Castle on a hill

Vianden Castle

Inside Chapel of Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle on a hillWe are off in our rental car by 9:15am. We are heading to Vianden Castle. It’s supposed to take an hour but it takes us longer due to some inadvertent side trips.

We follow a huge curve in the road and there it is, looming from a high hilltop; Vianden Castle.

John at Vianden CastleOnce again we are walking uphill, but my legs are feeling much better today.

I thoroughly enjoy the castle tour. They also have an artisan Easter egg display. We have lunch at the castle restaurant and then drive back through beautiful countryside to our hotel.

Luxembourg City

John near the Ducal Palace
The Ducal PalaceAfter a quick stop in to our room, we head out again by tram to city centre. It starts to drizzle.

We head into the old town. I love European old towns.

We check out the Ducal Palace, William II Square and the Hotel de Ville. Click here for a short video of the square.

Notre Dame Cathedral de Luxembourg

Notre Dame de Luxembourg Cathedral

Inside Notre Dame de Luxembourg and its stained glassIt is now starting to rain so we head to Notre Dame Cathedral. The stained glass is so colourful. The crypt has very clean lines and has its own kind of beauty.

Bowl of Lobster Soup with breadIt’s still raining so we go for lunch #2. We find a cute little cafe where I have a warming lobster soup with crusty bread; perfect for this damp weather. John has a cappuccino.

By the time we are done, the weather has cleared. Now that it’s nicer we check out the square, The Hotel De Ville Luxembourg with daffodils in frontHotel de Ville and palace again. Everything is prettier in the sunlight.

We meander around the area just taking in the ambiance and architecture.

Too soon it’s time to head back. We are still full so we pick up some salads, snack’s for tomorrow’s drive and beer (raspberry lambec for me) and head back to the hotel to pack.

Returning Home

Striped Condor Airlines PlaneOnce back at the hotel, I go down to reception to get ice. I go back up to our floor and knock on 317. No answer….where is John? I knock and knock. The man across the hall opens his door. He’s only wearing a bath towel. I apologize and head back down to reception. It turns out that we are staying in 326. Oops.

We are flying Condor home from Frankfurt Airport. Condor is a bit of a pain to fly because they only give you 8kg for your carry on and personal item together. Even with the neck pillows this will be a challenge. Unfortunately Condor was the only direct and affordable flight in our time frame.

It turns out that they stuck us in the back…by the washrooms. Argh. However, the flight goes better than I expected and they didn’t weigh our luggage which was way over 8KG.
