Laid Back Day in Lucerne

Musegg Wall and Towers

Musegg Walls and Towers

Three Swiss CowsI finish our laundry in the morning and we have a stimulating conversation with our host’s partner who is a journalist from Kenya before we drive to Lucerne city centre.

We start walking up the steep hill to the Musegg Wall which are the remains of the walls that once protected the city. We pass some adorable cows along the way (part of a farm in the city attraction). One of the black cows looks a lot like my dog.

Spring PrimulaThe pathway and slope are filled with flowering primula. There are many dohl birds nesting in the stonework of the towers.

Today John and I are having an unplanned day of laid back sightseeing. No rush, no schedule.

View of Lucerne from the TowerThe Musegg Walls and Towers offer great views over Lucerne. There are more than a few steep steps on this walk. I work up an appetite.

Walking along the Lake Side

John on the Lucerne Lakefront Promenade
Kimberly on the Lakefront promenadeJohn and I go to different places for lunch (I want something substantial and John wants coffee and a danish). After eating we meet up at the lakefront.

It is a beautiful day to walk around the waterfront. We walk the long promenade fronting Lake Lucerne. The colourful spring flowers are in full bloom.

Swan sitting on her nestA swan sits on her nest at the edge of the lake while her partner floats nearby. She continues to make adjustments to her nest which consists of twigs, a dandelion and something that looks suspiciously like a leather wallet.

People playing boulesPeople are playing boules in the lakefront park. Everyone seems to be enjoying their day in the sunshine.

Lion of Lucerne

The Lion of Lucerne
We follow our GPS to the Lion of Lucerne. The monument is a memorial for the Swiss Guards who lost their lives defending King Louis and Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution.

The carving is so beautiful and emotive. The face of the lion speaks volumes on pain, bravery and sorrow.  Magnify the face of the lion in the picture. I truly is a work of art. A person cannot come to Lucerne without seeing this.

Just Wandering

Lucerne Town Hall

Kimberly with her picnic on the side of the river in LucerneJohn and I don’t have a set schedule today. We are enjoying just wandering around, people watching and admiring the surroundings.

We stop into a Coop grocery store to get smoked salmon and cream cheese bellinis, fresh blueberries and chocolate croissants for a picnic by the lake.

Beautiful Lucerne buildingReplenished, we check out the the town hall and Weinmarkt Square. It feels like there is another gorgeous building or fountain, everywhere we look.

Soon it’s time for another picnic , this time by the river. We pick up some cans of prosecco, emmenthal cheese and Swiss chocolate to consume by the river. A group of three Swiss alpenhorn players set up and perform near us. Click here for a short video.

We just have time to stop at the Franciscan church before heading back to our Airbnb.
