Temples and Kuala Lumpur Night Lights

Entrance to upper cave

Batu Caves

John and the Deity Statue

Rainbow Stairs up to theToday we catch a cab and head to the Batu Caves which are about 20 minutes outside of Kuala Lumpur. This is one of the greatest attractions in Malaysia.

The caves are used as Hindu Temples. They are actually one of the most sacred Hindu sites outside of India. Inside one of the caves is a 42 metre statue of the Hindu deity Murugan.

Monkey Trouble

Monkeys on the front of the Hindu Temple

Monkey on the temple stairsIt is very impressive, especially the rainbow stairs up to the temple. And monkeys…so many monkeys all over the place. The place is crawling with them. I am not a big monkey fan. At one point, I put my hand down on a spot where a big male monkey had just been sitting…it was wet. I don’t even want to imagine what substance the wetness is. I can’t stop applying hand sanitizer just thinking of it. Gross.

Inside the Caves

Interior with temple inside the cave
opening of the caveWe wander around the massive caves which would be an attraction themselves without the temples. There are many people here for religious purposes and not to be gawking tourists like us.

From the caves we haggle with a taxi driver for the fare to Thean Hou Temple. Kuala Lumpur has an app like Uber called Grab. an colourful Hindu TempleUnfortunately the caves are so busy it’s hard for the Grab drivers to get here. So we end up paying twice the Grab amount for a regular taxi that is already here.

Courtyard of the Buddhist Temple

Thean Hou Temple is a Buddhist temple that is six tiers high and surrounded by red lanterns. It is one of the largest and oldest Chinese Buhhdist temples in South East Asia and is located on top of a hill. It is beautiful but packed with people because of Chinese New Year. Traffic to get here is horrendous but it is worth Dragon at the templeit. Lovely temple with great views.

Kimberly and John in the Sky BarWe take a cab back to the hotel for a rest, then we head out again; me for a massage and John for a coffee and pastry.

Thoroughly relaxed we head back to the night market which is much quieter during the day. We have an early supper before heading to the Sky Bar at Trader Hotel.

The view on the 33rd floor looking over the Kuala Lumpur City Centre is fabulous. We have our drinks and head to the KLCC pond for the sound, water and light show. It is so pretty at the park with all its lit up red lanterns and colourful dancing fountains. Click here for a short video.
