A Visit to Charco Verde
Morning at Rancho Tranquillo
Before breakfast I discover a tarantula hiding on a ledge under a towel that I was taking off the line. I’ve seen a lot of tarantulas before so I wasn’t fazed. I actually found him kind of cool. (John speaking here- I guess Kimberly screaming out “Oh my God!” is her definition of being unfazed).
Meanwhile a few feet away, a flock of guinea hens were going about their business and an adorable flock of green parrots were eating fruit in the guava tree. I love this!

We have yet another great breakfast made by Daniela and Tony and then head out for one last day on the scooter.
Scootering to Charco Verde
Fortunately our destination today, Charco Verde is much closer than yesterday’s.
We pass a guy on a scooter with a horse on a leash. While driving and trotting his horse, he is simultaneously talking on his cell phone.
At one point, we don’t notice a speed bump until the last minute and my bum becomes airborn for a second.
Charco Verde
Charco Verde is a nature reserve with a butterfly pavilion. We do the trails, the main one going around the lagoon. Unfortunately, we only saw small lizards.
However, we could hear the howler monkeys in the distance. It sounds like the roar of an ancient dinosaur. Click here for a video where you can hear them.
Punta Jesus Maria
We get back on the road and stop next at Punta Jesus Maria. This beach area has a point (very similar to Point Pelee). From one side you can see the live volcano and the other side the extinct one…but today for some reason we couldn’t see the extinct one.
In and Around Moyogalpa
We make it back into town and drop off the scooter with no incident . We are unscathed.
After walking through town, we have a late lunch, early supper and walk back to Rancho Tranquillo.
Last Evening at Rancho Tranquillo
We go for a swim in the lake and watch all the cool birds along the shore. After changing, Daniela gives us banana bread and we head back to the lake to watch the sunset.
We end the night by sitting out and listening to the sounds of nature. So lovely
Correction
(Correction: several readers of yesterday’s blog pointed out, quite correctly, that Ometepe Island is not the largest fresh water island in the world. That title belongs to our own Manitoulin Island. John got the incorrect info from a Central American website. Ometepe is in fact the 10th largest. Thanks to our knowledgeable followers for picking up on the error.)
