Tel Aviv and Jaffa- Day 3

The Cab is Booked

After a delicious serving of “breakfast pasta” (leftovers from the other day) we got a cab at 9am to head to Old Jaffa.

Through Google translate we organize for the Russian speaking cab driver to pick us up at 5:55am tomorrow and take us to the airport.  It seems tomorrow is a day off in Israel for their elections so we are happy to have a definite booking for our airport transportation. However as we get out of the cab he types on his phone the following which gets translated as “See you at 5:55am God willing”. Hopefully he will be there!

Old Jaffa

An old building in Old Jaffa

the Jaffa Clock TowerWe are dropped of in Old Jaffa by the Clock Tower where we meet up for our walking tour.

Old Jaffa is even older that Jerusalem. It is 4,500 years old. The tour is interesting but up and down a lot of steps.

Jaffa is the site of the Jonah and the whale story and the Greek story of beautiful Andromeda being left on a rock for a monster to eat as punishment for her vanity only for her to be rescued by Perseus who slays the monster and marries Andromeda as his reward.

Let’s Eat

a man standing on a bridge with the sea in the backgroundEmily and I are famished after our tour so after going to the astrological Wishing Bridge, we start searching for a restaurant. The bridge has the 12 zodiac signs and if you make a wish while your hand rests on your sign and you are looking out to sea your wish will come true.

Dr Shashuka waving as he sits in his restaurantWe talk about going to Dr Shashuka’s (as seen on Somebody Feed Phil) but Emily and I just want to eat at the first place that seems good. Em, Vince and John go to a sabich restaurant and I go to a pita one next door and get a portobello mushroom pita. I don’t know what all is in it but it is so delicious that I inhale it.

Shortly after we leave our restaurants we find Dr Shashuka’s Restaurant. We even get to see Dr Shashuka himself, who waves at me.

Last Hours in Israel

sunset over a Tel Aviv beach

four people eating supperWe walk for over an hour along the beach promenade from Jaffa back to our apartment. My feet are killing me. After resting, John and I go to the beach to watch the sunset.

Em, Vince, John and I head to a highly recommended vegan restaurant for our final supper in Israel. The restaurant does not disappoint.
