Leaving our Trullo

Trulli on our Masseria

Today is our last full day in Italy. I am amazed at how fast it went.

We are up earlier than planned…could it have something to do with the rooster?

Polignano di Mare

Streets of Polignano di MareLama Monachile

The four of us overlooking Lama MonachileWe check out of our trullo and drive to Polignano di Mare. The town is quite busy but the old town is pretty. We check out a few viewpoints of the famous beach nestled in a cove between two cliffs. The water is blue and crystal clear. The beach itself is pebbly but still very pretty. Amature cliff divers jump for the different levels of rock. Click here for a short video.

Piazza Dell'orologioWe stop for coffee and people watch. It is a really hot and sunny day. We walk along the ‘lungomare’ or waterfront promenade and then it’s off to Bari where we are flying out tomorrow morning.

Bari and It’s Old Town

Detail on Bari Building

Louise in the hotel poolWe check in to our hotel, the Mercure Villa Romanazzi Carducci Bari. The day is now very hot and the grounds are beautiful so we enjoy a swim in the pool.

Then we head out to Bari’s old town. We walk to the train Cathedral of Saint Sabinostation and then to the old town. As with most cities in Italy, the old town is beautiful. We check out the ruins of an old Roman road. The old town is a mix of grand piazzas and narrow streets… and lots of churches and basilicas all tinted gold in the late afternoon sun.

Old Ladies Chatting by the BasilicaA couple of old ladies have taken up seats near St Nicolas Church and are chatting up a storm. I am certain that nothing that happens in the area escapes their knowledge. When walking through the narrow streets of homes, we often smell fresh laundry and see it drying on racks.

The Arch of WondersWe check out the the Arch of Wonder. Legend has it that a man built that arch in order to reach the woman he loved on the other side of the alley.

Supper and the Walk Home

Pedestrian walkway in Bari

Kimberly Having One Last Italian GelatoWe have a dinner of local pastas on Piazza Mercantile. On the way back to the hotel I have one final gelato, and I make it a big one.

We walk down blocks and blocks of wide pedestrian walkways flanked by shops on both sides.

The rest of the night is spent packing, weighing the suitcases, readjusting, repeat. We are all asleep by 10am.

Our Travels to Home

Our Bari to Rome Ryanair Plane

Sunrise at the Bari AirportMy alarm rings at 4am and we are on our way to the airport by 5am. There is a beautiful sunrise and our Ryanair Bari to Rome flight leaves right on time.

We have a 5 1/4 hour wait at Rome airport before catching an Air Transat flight to Toronto. We sit in the hot plane for an extra 45 minute delay because there were too many planes in the sky. After that everything goes smoothly and we are now home.
